A patent was recently given to Sony which states “hand-held [sic] device with touchscreen and digital tactile pixels”. The patent isn’t too clear on what this type of screen will be used for, but guesses would lead you to believe either a new Sony PSP 2.0 or a PSP phone maybe. A good number of potential uses are listed in the patent which include gaming devices, phones, portable media players, web browsing device and navigation. The “digital tactile pixels” have me interested. From what others have mentioned it seems like the tactile feedback could be in the form of vibrations on the screen to provide that kind of response. We have seen phones give feedback when touching the screen, but Read more… »

Wildcharge, the device that lets you wirelessly charge your RAZR, has just released new adapters for the iPhone, iPod, BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry 8800 and 2nd Gen iPod Nano. It still works the same: put the adapter on the back of your phone, place your phone onto the charging pad and wait for the juice to flow. No pricing information on this quite yet, but the old RAZR chargers were $34 (or $89 for the pad and the charger together).

Apparently the Belkin folks are rolling out a little something for the podcasting community this CES season. The company’s Podcast Studio is a self-contained, iPod-interfacing podcast production device… and not much else. The unit features dual XLR and 1/4″ inputs, a built-in microphone up top, an embedded speaker, and the styling of some 1950’s-space-opera transmogrifier. You can slot your iPod in the top and record directly to the player, thus eliminating the need for a computer nearby — until you need to get it online, of course. The only thing it’s missing is your smarmy, high-falutin’ opinions about avant noise-rock.

The new Vudu XL is the higher capacity version of the Vudu download and play video box. This Vudu model can hold 500 standard definition movies for $999, with 1080p/24 output over HDMI and component with optical and coaxial digital sound. The Vudu XL allows you to rent and download standard- and high-definition movies from “every major US studio and 22 independents.”

Sony’s all for loading multimedia functions onto their consoles (portable or otherwise) to add value, so the addition of VoIP via Skype is something we can definitely see them doing. The feature’s listed on Sony’s CES site, along with internet radio and a few other features we already know about, like Remote Play. So it’s not a matter of whether the PSP will grab Skype, it’s a matter of when the firmware update will be released. Hit the jump for the note in question.
