We’re not sure if Brando’s version of the external iPhone battery pack bests the others we’ve seen in performance, but it’s definitely the cheapest by far. At $25, it’s a whole $18 cheaper than the iPhoneck, and twice as costly as Macally’s PowerLink. Is it any good? No clue yet. But it’s cheap, which is all some people care about.

Finally we can all sleep at night, safe in the knowledge that Sony has created a prototype fuel cell system that fits in the palm of your hand. The combination lithium-polymer battery, backup battery, and control circuit are destined for future mobile devices. According to a company engineer, “We have been aiming to mount (a fuel-cell system) in mobile devices and finally reached a level of commercial design.” The tiny power-pack uses methanol as a fuel and controls supply with a hybrid pump, which allows it to regulate the amount of power used based on a system’s needs. This new gizmo will charge a pair of your AA or AAA NiMH/NiCad batteries in three to four hours of slurping power from a USB socket, no power brick required. It’s also apparently the “smallest and lightest” in the world. That may or may not be true, but it certainly is small enough to slip into your laptop case and not worry about. It’s even rubberized to make it a bit tougher for portability, so if you’re the type who needs AA batteries out in the field, it might be useful.

Battery chargers are nothing too exciting. You just plug them in, insert batteries and a few hours later the batteries are charged. There is nothing to jump up and down about there. However, this battery charger has an LCD display on the front. What the Alpha battery charger does is defaults the charging cycle to just 200mA. What this does is slows the charging time right down to a high number of hours which is better for the NiMH battery and prolongs the life of it. If you want a faster charge then manual settings of 500, 700, 1000, 1500 or 1800mA are possible Read more… »

Volvo decided to built a full-on working concept model of the Volvo C30-based car. The company is teamed up with Saab in a five-year plan to develop plug-in hybrids, and they’re currently planning a fleet of 10 cars to be tested in Sweden. Volvo plans to announce a hybrid version of one or more existing models within the next five years, but they’re certainly playing it safe — though the lithium-polymer batteries and in-wheel electric motors might prove them otherwise.
