ESA is showing off its new “ExoMars” bots, Bruno and Bradley, who are being prepped for a 2015 mission to the red planet. The six-wheeled bots are being designed to carry a significant scientific payload, oriented around the search for life, but won’t slouch in the maneuverability department, with six independently rotating wheels. In addition to independent movement, the wheels can also be locked into “wheel walking mode,” where treacherous terrain can be traversed by crawling instead of rolling over it. On the AI front, Bruno and Bradley have Read more… »

This innovative speaker disguised as a white wheel can be rolled around anywhere. The Freewheeler cordless stereo speaker producing high quality stereo sound is apt for indoor as well as outdoor.
The Freewheeler speaker offers 52 - 21,000 Hz of frequency response, battery life up to 8 hours, 112dB output and an in-built FM receiver. It equips a pair of coaxial speakers that are mounted inside the lacquered wood enclosure providing true stereo sound.
The receiver inside the wheel picks up the signal and filters it. This signal Read more… »

Maybe I’m not a slope-wise skier, but when I’m hurtling down a mountain I love to hear wind sounds—not music from my iPod. Other people are different, and this waterproof MP3 player from Lancer certainly fits the “rugged enough for big snowboard crashes” bill. The Laqa3’s design is a plain metal tube. And… well, that’s it. There’s a headphone connector, and presumably controls somewhere, but other than that it’s a plain metal tube. You may dig its industrial-look, or not, but it weighs just 25g, has IPX7 waterproofing so it’s good for swimming, and comes with IPX7 silicon ear Read more… »

This concept glider, dubbed Orlens, is attention-grabbing through its rather beautiful shape alone. But when you look into how it would work, you can see that designer Roland Cernat has put a lot of thought into its greenness. It would be made of entirely recycled materials, and be recyclable itself, would have photovoltaic cells atop the wings for energy for eco-friendly propulsion and have an aerodynamically-efficient body. The body too would be made from a flax-based bio-compound that Read more… »

Microsoft have created a great little mouse that folds up for easy storage while travelling around and then opens up to a larger more familiar size when needed. The mouse is wireless and is named the Arc Mouse.
I like the thinking behind this mouse as I once purchased a laptop mouse that was tiny in size. The idea behind a tiny mouse was great, but after a couple of hours of usage I quickly went back to the touchpad on my laptop. Maybe a fold up mouse might be the Read more… »

We’ve seen bouncy cameras and cameras that can be lobbed ahead for surveillance purposes, but this new concept from Turkish designer Hakan Bogazpinar looks to take the idea of tossable cameras one step further, with it boasting a specially designed tail intended to help keep it properly oriented. According to Bogazpinar, the camera would also be able to be customized to take still images at various Read more… »

Microsoft has announced the winners and, not surprisingly, there are a few familiar designs on the list. First place went to the Napkin PC, a concept that I mocked for being way too far out there. Nonetheless, Bill Gates must have like it, because he handpicked it as the winner of the Read more… »
