Sony’s popular Vaio FZ notebook just grew itself an enviro-conscience. If you buy a new Graphic Splash Eco Edition FZ with one of four new nature-inspired finishes, Sony will donate 1 percent of the purchase price (not just of the profits) to 1% For the Planet, “an alliance of businesses committed to creating a healthier environment.”
The new colors aren’t bad at all, and with names like Bloom, Clay Earth, Caribbean Water, and Spotted Life, you’ll almost feel like a hippy walking around with your sweet, expensive computer.
Skeptics take notice: as part of the initiative, Sony outlines all that’s already environmentally savvy with the FZ:
• Slim design for minimum use of natural resources.
• Easy-to-recycle materials for resource conservation.
• Packaging comprised primarily of recyclable materials.
• RoHS compliant components- free of hazardous materials such as lead.
Feel better already, don’t you? Look for them soon starting at $1,391, but remember, just like the earth’s own precious resources, they’ll be available in limited quantities.

After introducing a $200 Linux desktop, Everex has announced the plan to introduce a Linux notebook PC that will run on the GOS version of operating system and will cost sub-$300.
Available in 12.1-inch and 17-inch screens, these new laptops will also come with built-in Ubuntu Linux 7.10, one-click access to websites like Facebook and multiple Google Web applications.
You can also expect features such as easy access to free web based services to lessen the reliance on software based products.
“The intent of GOS is to take Linux to the consumer and do what Steve Jobs did with Mac OS X - to take an alternative OS and package it for the consumer. Linux has come a long way and could grab an audience in the low-end market,” said David Liu, founder of GOS. Read more… »

Can the masses be wooed by Linux? Second-tier PC maker Everex teamed up with a startup called gOS to build the gPC TC2502, a $199 VIA-powered Ubuntu 7.10 Linux system with an Enlightenment E17 interface. Although they assure us that the “g” doesn’t stand for Google, the PC’s productivity will be almost solely derived from Google apps accessed through Firefox: Mail, Calendar, News, Maps and Documents & Spreadsheets. It will also come with OpenOffice.org 2.2 and some other freeware Linux faves. But again, the question is, will the Wal-Mart crowd bite the bait? It turns out, 5% of people buying a PC at Read more… »
