Samsung Electronics announced its first GPS navigator equipped smartphone ‘SGH-i550’ during Symbian Smartphone Show in London.
With a candy bar-type design, the new i550 that is based on Symbian OS™ v9.2 and S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 enables users to choose from thousands of applications from the S60 applications library and have access to their favorites by using dedicated hot keys. With the GPS navigator function, voice activated turn-by-turn guidance makes it easy for car drivers to find directions while pedestrian mode offers specific locations and directions at walking speeds.
Other features included HSDPA 3.6 Mbps, full browsing with a 128 MB RAM, 2.6-inch LCD, 3.2M camera with video editing functionality, 150MB of internal user memory and an FM radio. It will be available in Europe from November 2007. Read more… »

I don’t know if Linus Torvalds has nightmares about Linux turning into Windows but some people definitely do. Linux Doesn’t Need to Look Like Windows has been a popular and oft-visited article about Vixta on reddit since last week. It had spurred about 100 comments going back and forth about the merit of Vixta’s user interface design and whether Linux should look like Windows.
However, first things first. What’s Vixta? I hear you ask. Its developers describe and define its goals like so:
- Absolutely free, in every sense.
- ABN - Absolutely No Config.
It’s possible to say all that about Ubuntu too so why the kerfuffle? Well, Vixta copies Windows Vista’s start menu and the side bar. Actually, its whole look is pretty Vista-ish. Download a copy and check it out.
Some people, however, hate the fact that there is a Linux distro - Vixta is based on Fedora - which tries to mimic Vista’s look and feel. The author of the aforementioned Information Week article writes, “…I confess to having mixed feelings about the whole thing. Mostly negative ones.” Read more… »

Sprint launched its version of the HTC Touch today, aimed not at business users (that most of the Windows Mobile platform devices target) but at consumers. The hope is that the flip-happy TouchFlo skin over the more familiar WM6 interface will draw in people with iPhone envy. The Touch will cost $250 with a two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate, and will be available on Nov. 4.
